camino del rey
Today I’ve read an article about Camino del Rey (also known as Caminito del Rey) – a pathway in El Chorro, close to Alora, in the Andalusian province of Málaga. The path in the rocks was constructed in 1905 in order to facilitate work for the employees at the hydroelectric power plants. The pathway was named after the king Alfonso XIII who crossed it in 1921.
For many years Camino del Rey was a huge attraction for mountain lovers and tourists. In 1999 and 2000 several people died while crossing the path. Since then the local government banned hiking there but there still are many daredevils who look for some adrenaline and go there. This summer the authorities decided to share costs for the renovation of the pathway. They estimate the works should take about 3 years.
For those who are interested I recommend The Cheap Route website where you can read about Camino del Rey, see a bunch of pictures and watch a video. The views are breathtaking but
I have to admit I felt nauseous at some point…
I would really love to hike there some time but until they finish the renovation, I’ll gladly go back to amazing Picos de Europa where I did few days hiking in 2008. It’s beautiful over there,
especially in Spring!
