(dis)belief

This week has been filled with the music of great John Mayer. After a long time I reached out for his music again. I have been continously listening to his 2006 LP Continuum (double platinum in the US and nominated for the Grammy Awards three times). And I simply can’t get enough. This record is amazingly addictive. Mayer mesmerizes with his silk voice and the guitars cry their blues tunes passionately. There is authenticity is each single song. No empty words, not a single false note. Amazing…

The song that has especially touched me emotionally is Belief. Firstly, I focused on the music – it has a catchy riff, a nice beat and a great solo. And then, after falling in love with this simple yet magnificent tricks, I studied the lyrics and… got totally blown away. They are so strong.
So strong and so true…

We’re never gonna win the world
We’re never gonna stop the war
We’re never gonna beat this
If belief is what we’re fighting for

Just as John Mayer points out – belief is a beautiful armor but it can make a great demage. It can be used in an inappropriate way, in a harmful way. Belief can kill. But is belief in the end what we’re really fighing for? REALLY?

The last verses of the song squeeze my heart…

What puts a hundred thousand children in the sand?
Belief can, belief can
What puts the folded flag inside his mother’s hand?
Belief can, belief can
